  1. Why not think of what it can still be? There's still iron ore to be turned into steel. There's a housing shortage that could use that steel. New factories could use that steel for both the machinery in the factories and to build something from that steel. Jobs could be created. Products could be exported. The middle class could once again grow. Old houses in Detroit could be renovated.

  2.  @whatdawhatda9272 No - I was a kid when the river burned. My father worked for Jones & Laughlin. We were told that it would take 100 years for Lake Erie to replenish itself. I will concede that environmental mistakes have been made in the past. However, that is not adequate reason to prevent what the Captains of Industry used to call "Progress." I have faith that mankind can learn from past mistakes. Renewing the rust belt can be considered a form of recycling, but this time the industries will be cleaner. It can be done, but the spirit must be willing.

  3.  @kurt1391 It used to be a kind of thing where people realized we are all in this together. When people work together, it's a whole lot better than working as single entities. It's also a whole lot better than selling out (outsourcing).

  4.  @whatdawhatda9272 Good Point - The country should have moved on to nuclear energy, geothermal and renewables long ago. These energy sources can feed the great industrialization of the future. This will provide good jobs and prosperity to the many. Some of the revenues generated will be used for research into ever better means of production.

  6. I like the trees - I don't get it. So the Jones act says the boats have to be built by Americans and manned by Americans. Is that really such a disadvantage? It seems like boat building can be done in the US. It seems like plenty of people would be willing to man those boats. Mark Twain used to write about riverboats. I think there is more to it than this Jones act which Peter seems fixated upon.
