But they are not a loved brand like Rolex and Patek even though they produce watches that are of the utmost quality.

People are not buying Rolex to compensate. The vast majority of watch buyers with the money want quality and brand recognition helps that. Everybody knows what a Rolex, Mercedes and bottle of Coca Cola is but few people would know what a Jaeger-Lecoultre Tourbillon is. If you asked somebody that on the street they may smack you and walk away.

They are wonderful watches but they do not have the brand or infrastructure that Rolex has. You can get Rolex dealers everywhere but not JLC. Now in 25 years time we maybe having a different conversation.

Vacheron and AP have their own issues in that they are not as loved as Rolex or Patek even though they like JLC are of immense quality. And the same applies to Girard Perregaux that very few people seem to respect. I think the issue is that Rolex is a brand everybody recognises and Patek is a brand that is considered the most high end (subjective). If JLC was to slimline their product offerings and offer great watches at a great price they could easily build their brand image but it takes time.

To you guys those are the watches that you can easily name but that is not the same for casual middle class watch buyers. Most could easily name you Rolex but few could name you a JLC. I suspect the real reason behind most of this is that Richmound owns too many luxury high end watch brands that are all in the same space competing.

@warusk2nd Just copy the way the Swiss pronounce it.

Rolex makes everything them self.

Rolex are not mainstream either but they do have brand recognition like Mercedes or Coca Cola (mainstream).

I still have no idea how to spell Arnold Schwarzenegger and I have to go and google it everytime. And I am also unsure if we pronounce it correctly. Brand recognition is the key to people being able to pronounce it. The problem that JLC has is that it is owned by Richemont and as such do not get the full weight of the parent company thrown behind them. Owning that many different brands competing in the same pool creates its own problems.

99% of people could not tell you about JLC or Patek or Girard Perregaux.

Not a positive at all. Brand recognition is what drives a business forwards. Without enough customers to buy and support the products being sold it means less probability of long term success. Rolex is not going anywhere but I cannot say the same for several of the other luxury brands that watch snobs love.

You are not an average watch buyer who has money that walks into a store and buys. Most will recognise what a rolex is and then learn about it. JLC do not have that brand recognition so it means their business has issues over the long term.

Tudor is not universally acclaimed and most who buy them are looking for a Rolex inspired watch. Let us be honest here. Most reviewers of Tudor automatically mention its Rolex connection. No body knows who Zenith are lets be honest. AP has the exact same problem that JLC has in that it is not as well known or recognized brand as Rolex. Cartier and JLC are owned by Richmond and they are all competing in the same pool with several other Richmond watches.
