Conservativism while being focused on tradition is not a slave to tradition but it does recognise the universal truths of free speech, the right to life and the ability to have private possessions. These ideas are as old as the hills. Conservatism does no say you cannot have a TV or the ability to use the internet. Nor does it say that two men cannot have a relationship but it warns that if a society is based on men having romantic relationships that society will collapse.

A person can be a liberal and a Conservative at the same time.

@mathewlegrange5880 Small government does not mean no government nor does it mean that there is a vacuum. It requires that society has a population of citizens that take active party in their society so that various co-operatives and corporations do not get to take complete control.

@dallasswoveland4466 Everybody knows what evil is and every man can identify a beautiful women when they see one. We know that sharp objects hurt as there are universal truths that you cannot whimper away with postmodern philosophy.

Conservatism addresses universal concepts such as ownership, family and other traditions. As a codified philosophy conservatism has been around since the 1700s but the ideas that it are based on are much older. Liberty and conservatism are not opposing philosophies. They have lots of overlap and a person can be both a liberal and a conservative.

Conservatism is not about economics it is the fact that economics is based on the philosophies that are part of conservatism.

@mathewlegrange5880 That is what America was in its past. Hence why certain horrible things were ended.

Liberalism is based on Life, Liberty and estate and can also be fused with conservatism.

@unicaviard Libertarianism is an actual political movement that is focused on politics. Classical liberalism is a philosophy. What people call classical liberalism is in fact conservativism today. It means for demonstration sake a person can be for small government, individual freedoms like free speech and still believe in the value of religion. You can be all for fiscal responsibility but at the same time like Santa Claus.

@shahzad5835 Classical liberalism recognised Life, Liberty and Estate. It also recognised tradition and its various guesses. Do not confuse liberalism with socialism.

@dallasswoveland4466 A liberal is somebody that believes in Life, Liberty and Estate. They can also believe in tradition as well. Just because you believe a person should be free does not mean you cannot also want tradition to take place. I can want a person to have free speech and still practice the tradition of their religion or family customs.

@dallasswoveland4466 "Conservative refers to conservation. Conserving (the current) established, prevailing, traditional, norms" That is Toryism you are referring to which has not truly been in practice for a long period of time. I will give you a sort of over view of the three philosophies at hand which are Liberalism, Toryism and conservativism. Liberal believes in Life, Liberty and Estate. Toryism believes in God, Queen, and Country. Conservatism believes in Crown, Lords, and Commons.
