The Russians were only actually able to form a counter attack on the Germans because all of the German resources were spread over Europe trying to stop an invasion. The Russian were destroyed by the Germans at first and it was only through aid and distraction did the Russians survive.

It is simple they lost because they entered a war against the US. The US industrial output was many orders above that of Germany and Japan combined. The US then had millions of troops use this technology on a vast scale. The US Navy dominated the atlantic, Pacific and greater Asian oceans. If Germany had of just focused on Russia it would have one there.
