Cherry-picking?
They just made better movies back then. Every year back then had 20 great movies released with one or two being exceptional. You are lucky today to get a good movie every two or three years.
Take 1958 for example you had the Vikings, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Defiant Ones, The big country, Vertigo, Gigi, Touch of Evil, Horror of Dracula and I could go on and on with the films of that year.
1959 had Ben-Hur, Some Like it Hot, North by Northwest, Rio Bravo, Anatomy of a Murder, Imitation of Life and so on.
1963 Cleopatra, How the West Was Won, Charade, The Great Escape...........
There is no Cherry picking.
