I would suggest that you save up and get a complete engine rebuild. Do not modify the engine in anyway just make sure it is in good running order. After that you can get anything else you want such as new suspension or seats or even lights. I think you can get an complete engine rebuild for about £5000 or a partial rebuild for about £3,000. And if you go the full hog you can get the body check out for any corrosion or damage. DO it over the next couple of years and you can keep the car for the next 50 years. The price of these by the way are going to shoot up in the next decade because NA cars are going to be lusted after.

It is a humble amazing car. It is clean and simple and beautiful to drive. The Newer 911's are not as nice even though they are very very fast.

The Drive in the 996s are as close as you will get to Analogue in terms of modern Porsches.

If you start with the 911 you may not want the BMW. There handling is very unique and simply perfect. They are lightweight yet very powerful and very well balanced.

If you are getting one for the track I would suggest buying one with paddles and getting a setup such as RPM CSR. That would be the best track car you could buy in my opinion for the money.

The lights on an 996 or anything else on it is not going to look as good as a 964 but so what. They can be had for a bargain while not as pretty as the 964 they are still better looking than other cars on the road. The 996 was produced for the masses.

It is ugly compared to the 964 but then all modern Porsches are ugly compared to the 964.

China will be awash with them some day.

All modern Porsches are ugly let's be honest. Picking on the 996 is not going to change that.

BMW's are nice but trying getting a classic one they cost a fortune and Porsches are far better value I think.

You can still pick one of these up for about £10,000 to £15,000 and get a £5000 engine rebuild and a few other changes and you will have a stunning car that is better than any M3 or Mercedes c63 (two good cars by the ways). If you buy a 2003 model and do some work to it you will effectively have a new car that will destroy anything on the road for £50,000 hell I will go higher and say £70,000.
