It is the proper name used everywhere. People do not understand that Rugby is football as well.

Soccer is the proper name for the sport.

@Ky-xm7tc Football is a name used for several sports. Even Rugby is a form of football.

Original football in the UK was played with ball in hand. The reason it was called football was probably due to it being played on foot and not horseback.

@DavidW-ng5zv Soccer is the correct name everywhere. Football is a term that can be applied to several codes of ball games. Soccer is the name that I called it and was the name my grandfather and his father before him called the game.

@DavidW-ng5zv Soccer means association football. When Rugby football and Association formed the game was known as Soccer. Football means a ball game that is played on foot not horseback. When association football was formed the game was known as soccer so as to differentiate it. Soccer is not a term that originated in the US which shows that you are ignorant on its history. So there is Rugby football and Soccer football. And guess what Association Football does not get to use the term exclusively. There are many different forms of football from Gaelic, Calcio to Australian Rules. Australian rules football is probably as old as soccer.

@DavidW-ng5zv A lot of rugby people will call it soccer and some of them will not be a fan of the game at all. Football is the most common way of describing it in the UK I am not saying otherwise. But you will find people in the UK calling it soccer.

It is still known as soccer in the UK because there is also traditional football and Rugby.

@DavidW-ng5zv Soccer means association football. That is the traditionally name for it. Rugby is also football.

@MegaKonartist Soccer is shorter than saying association football.

@DavidW-ng5zv Association Football is the proper and correct name but as you have pointed out it is a mouthful and very formal as well hence why it was called soccer. The problem with using just the word football is it applies to several other types of ball games that are just as old even older. The proper term is Soccer and that is what my Great Grandfather and Grandfather called it and both of them played Soccer and Rugby. They both would describe Soccer and Rugby as football so to tell the difference it is called Soccer. I come from a Rugby background so I will call it Soccer when talking about it and I may just be old fashioned but it is the proper terminology.

@DavidW-ng5zv Just to give you an idea of how particular these things become there is Rugby Union and Rugby league and those that practise each code will call them Union or League. SO you may hear people calling Rugby as union. Some early Rugby League clubs switched to playing Association Football (soccer) with the same players playing Soccer.

@DavidW-ng5zv I am from the UK originally and now live in America.

@DavidW-ng5zv We seem to be going around in circles due to your lack of history and knowledge. Soccer means association football are you disagreeing with that or not. A simple yes or not to that question would be sufficient.
1
@DavidW-ng5zv You can call it football if you want nobody really cares but do not reprimand others for calling it soccer and then falsely claiming that only Americans call it it Soccer. association
