Of the market value of semiconductors the US produces nearly 60% of market value in manufacturing. So the chips that run the internet for example are mostly coming via US manufacturing. Taiwan specializes in manufacturing RISC based chips that are based on ARM designs. Those are the chips that power phones. While it is important it is not the defining aspect of US relations with Taiwan. The US knows that Taiwan is an important Island so it offers support for that military reason.

US relations with Taiwan has nothing to do with microchips. That has been an overplayed card in the media.

The US in WW2 estimated that it would cost the lives of hundreds of thousands of Marines, take hundreds of naval ships and constant aerial bombardment to take the Island from Japan. Guess how many poorly armed troops the Japanese had on the Island about 30,000 at most.

Taiwan has been series about this for 70 years. It has thousands of missiles for air defence, naval ship defence and hundreds of fighter jets that can be used to defend the Island. They are very serious about their defence.

If China even tries to blockade Taiwan from the wider world the US Navy will move into the area. They did it before and will do it again. One US carrier could wipe out the whole of Southern China.

The US only imports about 15% of its goods with about. That means of the 1.3 trillion the US importants about 220 billion of that coming from China. The US has no dependency on China at a national level.
