That is socialist Canada for you. It is hard to carry a sidearm and high capacity magazines are not the norm. I went there a few years ago and never again. I never go out into the wilderness without a side arm.

@maladetts Canada is not a socialist economy so yes that is an oxymoron but it has a political system that is being pushed by socialists in a particular direction.

@30minutesLess You are in the wild so yes anything can happen. Carrying a first aid kit and if possible satellite phone would be a good idea or a radio. Only stupid liberals go out in the wild without basic tools.

If you are out in open space like that where predators live you really need to be carrying a shotgun. If you are going out in a truck you should have a powerful handgun in the car at all times even if that means having a gun safe in the car. It only takes one occasion where you may need that gun to justify carrying it. All it took was me having one meeting with a bear to realize that I needed a gun every single time.

@maladetts Most of the politicians in Canada are orientated towards socialism. Such an example would be the outright banning of private hospitals. I could give you hundreds of examples if I wanted to.

@maladetts I have seen bears on my farm on several occasions. Had one close encounter. The bear was not aggressive and I drove of on my bike but if that bear wanted to it could have torn me apart and I could have done nothing. Animals are sometimes aggressive and sometimes not but it is out of your control. I have never encounter a Cougar.

@maladetts I live on a farm so it is out on its own. I have seen bears on several occasions. Never been attacked or anything like that but I am still weary. The bear was too close for me to take off and leave it. If the bear wanted to it could have easily chased me down as it would have sprinted much quicker than I could have taken off even though I was on a dirt road. I could go out on the farm with no gun but that in my opinion would be a risk. I can be a considerable distance from the house as well at times. I do not feel nervous or scared when out there but I carry a tool that allows me to protect myself.

@maladetts Guns are about freedom and the ability to protect your self but that is not what I was referring to. I am talking about such policies as the banning of private hospitals by those pushing socialism. The media in the western world is pro socialism.

J W During frontier times these types of confrontations were very common not so much in modern times. Wolf populations are growing all over the world and it is stands to reason that it would occur. I had one run in with a bear that was enough to convince me that these things do happen more often than we realize.

The fact you compared a large hunting wolf with a curious dog shows how naive you are. You probably get everything you know about animals from wild life documentaries that today do not even show you that they kill other animals. You probably believe that wolves hunt an animal and then the animal escapes. You remind me of a hippy liberal I once seen in Thailand who tried to step in and save a cat from some dogs who almost then turned on him and he probably did not realize how lucky he actually was.

@bobjackson715 Wolves attack animals for food and territory. They are not some cute little creature from a movie. That man was a seasoned hunter who knows wildlife far better than anybody else. I know people who were charged by wolves and Bears. Wolves are smart but it is in context to them being a wild animal. They rarely cross paths with humans but it is not uncommon for them to do so.

Many intelligent animals can could on a very basic level. The reason they can do that is because they can recognise numbers in their packs. It is a visual count they can do as opposed to a numerical count. It is why predators sometimes will attack one human but not several.

@bradruhl8592 If you have the training and knowledge you could go with nothing but the vast majority of people simply do not have that. I have served in the military and have extensive field craft and that is even with light provisions but I will still bring adequate and best equipment. I have Arctic experience but you would never get me going withouy a good level of equipment.

@jpkjnn6733 I am not saying Canada is a socialist economy because it is not. What I am saying is that certain political movements that are pro socialism are interfering in all manner of things. Including the right to have a side arm went going out into the wilderness. Wild animals rarely attack but then can do so at times. You would be a fool not to have a side arm with you when you are deep in the wilderness. Even on my farm I will go out to places with a rifle and have a side arm. I have routinely seen Bears but with no incident but all it will take is one incident.

@bigbud6842 It only takes one incident with a wild animal. If for example I spot something in the vicinity of my sheep what should I do? Do you think I should talk to the wild animal and reason with it.

You should always carry a shotgun on your back. One that is preferably loaded and is semi automatic. If all three of them had loaded shot guns that whole situation would have played out a lot quicker.
