  1. at the same time however, the political and (more so) moral clarity looked only loosely aligned at this point and that was evident when he tried to draw the moral equivalence with ww2. the cold war (years later) was obviously a different beast from the direct threat that the national socialists (and japan) posed. just as the global war on terror has been a different kettle of fish from the cold war. yes, there are parallels that can be drawn (as there can be contradictions that can be identified) and yes, there are degrees of alignment (as well as misalignment) that follow but the overarching theme of the communist threat (as with the specific form of 'jihadi' doctrinal hijacking inside the islamic faith) is (and was) not so easy to discern as the degrees of separation that seem to increase in any versus with communist terror (a moving target clearly) and not decrease (as with the 🇦🇹🎨's misperception of what 'reich' should entail)
