With the money you pay you get access to numerous benefits, which among other things includes funding to poor regions (Cornwall got £100 million from the EU, all which now has to come from the UK itself), but more importantly, access to the EU single market. The economic benefits from being part of the single market outweighs the costs, but now the UK has to deal with the consequences of the stupidity of leave voters who failed to recognize that.
Also when I say "the British empire dead in the water", I implicitly mean that the UK isn't that small at all, just not big and economically strong enough to strongarm the other 27 nations combined in the union - the UK doesn't even have a bigger GDP than Germany alone. The idea that it somehow were is delusion but that's probably what a lot of people in the UK, especially England thought. However, the UK has an economy that is comparable to that of France and thus was a net contributor to the union, but again, the benefits from the union were bigger than the drawbacks.
