  12. The U.K.'s trade deficit in 2022 at £ 87 billion was the highest since 1998 and double the £ 43 billion recorded in 2016. This occured despite a devaluation in the pound from $ 1.50 pre - Brexit to an all time record low of $ 1.03 last September which is supposed to improve the trade balance as it makes exports more competitive and increases the price of imports. Of greatest concern is the deficit on trade in goods which reached a record £ 231 billion in 2022 ( offset by a surplus in services of £ 144 billion ) which is acting as a serious drag on economic recovery.
