  1. Because a lot of Boomers are still alive, but no longer working and the population has grown, just about. The demographic crisis has been known/ warned about for at least three decades, just not on prime time TV. 1996 is when I learnt about it. Add to that Right to Buy and not replacing social housing stock, house prices being unaffordable because of restricted supply and stagnant wages, rampant profiteering and land banking by property builders and probably other factors I'm forgetting right now.

  2. Agree, my understanding is that growth_profit as currently defined relies on an ever increasing population, consuming ever more, each. It doesn't have to be that way - it's not a law of the universe. The UK along with other developed countries would be in population decline were it not for immigration. The low birth rates are mostly attributable to the financial insecurity experienced by the vast majority of the population and factors affecting housing supply previously mentioned. Not sure what the 'great replacement' conspiracy has to do with housing and people's need for it. If you feel the housing crisis is down to immigration, please say so. Not annoyed, just not in the mood for dancing.
