  21. Even in my lifetime, I can remember the policeman on his beat, complete with bicycle. If you dared to go out on your bike at night and without lights, it was odds on that you'd be spotted by a cop. There was no riding on pavements with a bike who's frame was bigger than 16 inches (these were classed as children's bikes.) The police had contact with the community and picked up useful information that led to arrests. We dared not to argue with a policeman, like the kids do now and those policemen that were in cars were known as the mobile division. I watch the t.v. programmes about the police on C5 and all they seem to do is chase kids in stolen cars at high speeds and endangering the public. When apprehended, they are searched straight away for cannabis, mainly and have their car confiscated and crushed in most cases.
