Although the description of a submarine as being nuclear, the actual power is generated by steam, driving turbines (as in a power station.) The shaft from the turbine is connected to an electric motor, that provides the final drive for the propellors. The high pressure steam is condensed and used indefinitely. The American nuclear aircraft carriers use a similar principle and aircraft are propelled from the deck by a steam catapult. . .so steam still has it's uses here and throughout industry too.
