  1. From the early 1960's we had P.E. at least once a week, games on the field and cross country. From 11 to 13 it was 1.5 miles and for the remaining years, it was 3 miles. I walked home at lunchtime, had lunch then walked back. A distance of six miles including the walk to school in the morning and walking home at night. Until recently the school playing field was still available, but is now built on. I would imagine that the kids now are not carrying out the same degree of exercise.
