  1. It's taken for granted that these objects are manned, but could it be that they are the equivalent of our space probes? The erratic movements of some would suggest so, as a being piloting these things wouldn't survive the G forces that they display. Their owners probably visit occasionally to retrieve them along with their information that they've gathered.
