@SirMo Well, GF may be an AMD spin-off, but they definitely don't treat their employee base the same as AMD did. I've heard various nightmare stories about Global Foundries.

I thought the British computer industry failed because they couldn't make them leak oil...

"...patriotic and national pride, of which China has a healthy dose..." And if you don't have patriotism and pride, you'll find yourself in a concentration camp having your organs harvested for rich overseas businessmen.

@KeinNiemand The other side of that is (cr)Apple doesn't want people to even get legitimate USED chips sold as used/recovered parts. Can't have their captive audience being able to keep their older machines running, it could cut into Tim Cook's Donut-and-Sushi budget.

as far as keeping the signal connection to the probe active for as long as possible, what they probably need is a multi-stage system. a component that stays in orbit as a signal relay, and a probe unit to go to the surface. At that point it could actually have multiple surface probes all communicating with the orbiting relay. The relay could buffer the signal so that it could complete sending the data to Earth even after the surface probes failed. And if the signal from the surface probe(s) doesn't need to be pushed all the way to earth, they might get more bandwidth out of it (no guarantee on that though).

With all the IA hype, the only AI I want to hear about is "Ai Dee" (愛Dee ?) 😁

And here I thought "YKK" was short for 'Yokohama Kaidashi Kikō'.
