  1. I expect CLR is meant more for removing stains from other surfaces, not so much for rust removal from metal (so much like you said, using the product for the job it's best suited for). Vinegar is often used for removing rust on vintage computer parts (it's not too strong a product for what is usually thin metal shielding, and it's cheap enough to be able to soak the pieces in).
