My first summer job was at Space Research (mainly doing maintenance and other jobs around the complex). Down the hall from my dad's office in the Engineering Building was one of the prototype satellite projectiles, in a display case.

I recall seeing paintings from an artist who did cat portraits. He was slowly descending into schizophrenia, and the sequence of pictures showed how the disease's progression turned them from realism to completely unrecognizable splashes of color.

I know when I eventually have Alzheimer's I don't want to have to wait nearly 12 years to die. Let me at least be lucid in my last days.

Same here. I had to watch my grandmother decline from it; eventually she was only there physically, her personality was long gone. Mind you, that was the late 70's to early 80's, when there was far less information on it and far fewer resources. Dad was showing early signs of it when he died in 2008 (not from Alzheimer's).
