The '90's had "Neon Genesis Evangeleon", "Revolutionary Girl Utena", "Martian Successor Nadesico", etc. The 80's had "Bubblegum Crisis", "Super Dimension Fortress Macross", "Dirty Pair", "Akira", etc. The big difference is that it's no effort at all to find present-day anime that doesn't suck, which I simply can't say for American television (and I don't bother listening to current American pop either).
