  1. Which just goes to show they're too lazy to even try to cover up their own corruption. It's like WalMart, where TWICE I've bought electronics sold as NEW that proved to be used when I opened them up (like an answering machine that already had messages on it). I don't buy electronics from them now (not that I shop there much at all)

  4. Back in 1996 I spent a month at their test lab in San Jose. The multimedia software company I worked for was bundling software with Acer's consumer systems, and I was there helping troubleshooting & customizing. So I find myself having a bit more connection with them from seeing the company from the inside (working at IBM was different since there I was working in their high-range Unix systems). But these days I either build my own systems from the parts I choose, or I re-purpose old machines that became too slow/clunky for MSWindows (they usually work much better under Linux, unless they're some P.o.S. Dell all-in-one). Even my MacOS machines I've picked up dirt-cheap used, and I refurbish and hack them beyond what Apple thinks they should support.

  6. MicroCenter has some good selection on their website. But getting to their Yonkers store is a severe PITA. I did it once, never will again. So buying online from them would be the alternative. But they will REFUSE to sell to you unless you provide them with your cell number. Not a landline, not VoiP, not a Google Voice number, an actual mobile number (their system will validate it before they accept it). Well, NO ONE gets my cell number except family and my daughter's school (not even work, but that's a given anyway). So if that's the way they're going to play it, I'm quite happy to NOT buy anything from MicroCenter.
