The US military at one time required all their equipment be US made just for that reason, although with things like the tree-huggers driving a lot (or most) metal-casting out of the country, we have to have the cast turrets for our own tanks made in places like India. And there's patent concerns too. Some of that artillery we were using in WWII that we were using against the German army? They used patents owned by German companies. As I understand it, when the war was over, we then had to pay patent licence fees to those companies. These days I could just see patent holders in an opposition country tying us up with patent violation suits.
