The thing Apple just won't accept; your data is far more valuable than the phone. It's just that Apple doesn't give a crap about your data.

@Deon Denis out on their extended trip, there might not have been a good, or good and trustworthy way to back them up. Which is where local backup would be useful. microSD while you're out and about, then transferred to a USB HDD when you get to the hotel.

I'm not sure even Apple know how their phones work.

Simple enough thing to remember: Apple lies. As do a majority of multinationals as well. The difference here is that apple lies about being "customer and user friendly" when they're about as customer hostile as Microsoft. They claim to be "environmentally conscious", then glue their hardware together so it isn't repairable and has to go into a landfill (or get sent to a third-world country so the phones contaminate THEIR country rather than ours). Would be NO problem securing and backing up photos if Apple would include a microSD slot. But that goes completely against Apple's iClot storage gulag. Sure, I just recently purchased a used MBP, but it was well under a C-note, and was probably about as much as I'd ever spend on an Apple product (and it's an old enough model it's actually repairable and upgradable myself). Only wanted it for brushing up on Mac experience, it'll be the only Apple device I'd ever need.

Well, it IS a dog, it's only slightly more intelligent than an Apple executive.

@liteoner OR they could include a microSD slot in it so you could archive to there (or just save to the removable card outright).
