  1. I've opened up PLENTY of drives. It's how I destroy ones that can't be wiped before I dispose of them. Open the case, pull out the platters, and smack them with a ball-peen hammer (to put dents in them). Laptop drives are much easier to destroy. Flatten them with a sledgehammer. I even tried putting one in a woodstove once. It was hot enough the drive actually crumbled.
