  1. Well, with all those other methodologies in there, the backers might be able to make a profit as "patent trolls". I could consider plenty of usages for expiring disks (various security uses, for example). Maybe even a disk which would destroy itself if read in a conventional player, maybe requiring a PGP key to prevent it self-destructing.

  2. But as per the question of whether "streaming services" cause more environmental harm, the advantage is you can apply incremental improvements easily. Incrementally, mind you. Not the belligerent government-mandated laws saying "do this, we don't care if it's technologically impossible, or drives business to countries that have NO concern for the environment".
