As a foreigner, it seems to me that most British people value having the tradition of a monarch, royal family and all those ceremonies. If that’s what they want, they should have it. I can see some value in having a head of state that lacks real political power, she’s above the nastiness of politics and can concentrate on representing her country well.

Hands off us Californians, even if they are Southern Californians, not San Franciscans! Seriously, I respect and admire the Queen, she puts the needs of the nation before everything else, then those of her family, and her own a distant third. I think she has shown flexibility in difficult situations, too. I followed Diana with interest because I was the same age, and I couldn’t understand why anyone would want the job she would have to do. People like her who believe in fairy tales are always headed for a rude awakening, life just isn’t like them. Unfortunately, she always put her own desperate emotional needs before everything else, in a vey public manner. I also thought she wasn’t very intelligent. I don’t approve of what Charles did, but she could have kept her dignity, and that of The Firm, intact, and she didn’t even try. However difficult a situation is, it’s always possible to behave with dignity and not spill your guts all over the media. Meghan and Harry are now using the Diana playbook.

When I saw that old film showing the Queen in her daily duties, I was shocked by how often she was interrupted and talked down to by the male members of her household, private secretaries, equerries or whatever they are. We women are used to this, men interrupt us ten times more often as they do other men and ten times more than we interrupt either sex. I thought at least the Queen would be treated with equal respect, but she wasn’t. Her patience is enormous, I would have said something very sharp to these guys.
