My grandfather and mother saddled me as a child with a stamp collection that I didn’t have the least interest in. My brother, of course, got the fascinating coin collection. I faithfully lugged around, through all my household moves, that hated huge, heavy, broken stamp collection book. I got guilt-tripped “your grandfather put so much into that collection for you” and “it might be worth money”. Finally, after my grandfather died, I gave it to my mother, saying I didn’t ever want to see it again. It was very sweet of him, but really, I didn’t want it, or the golf and tennis instruction, either, I just wanted to be with him. What could be more boring? Going to the dentist is more fun that looking at those old stamps.

I think Her Majesty, the present queen, has done a wonderful job of modernizing the monarchy, while keeping its principles and a bit of its mystery. I respect and admire her commitment to country, family and duty. I was so resentful, on her behalf, that she was pressured by the press and people to bow to that stupid woman, the Princess of Wales. She, I didn’t respect, I think she was only popular because she was young, attractive, and patronized some feel-good charities, but her behavior was disgraceful. I’m a die-hard American republican and democrat (I’m not talking political parties, but founding principles), but if the people of Britain want their monarchy, who am I to criticize their choice? I can see the value of a head of state that is non-political, especially after our last joke of a President, Trump, who used the Putin playbook in everything he did. Long live the Queen.
