There is a lot of of wishful thinking going on at the Richard III Society. I don’t disagree with them that Richard might have otherwise made a “good king”, but not if he had to murder children and friends, and discredit his mother and brother, to get there. I always suspected him of also having, at least indirectly, promoted his wife’s death. If by nothing else, by the withdrawal of attention or affection, if he ever had any for her. Only fiction suggests that he did; he more likely married her only for her half share of the enormous Warwick inheritance, when it was unlikely he could ever expect to be more than a Duke. After making himself king, and his only son dying, Queen Anne was in the way of his making a more prestigious and advantageous royal marriage, and, most importantly, to try for another heir. She might have been sickly, as she only ever produced the one child.
