  1. EDIT: Never mind, I just imagined widening out the holes around the sphere, and then rotating it 90 degrees to see the arch attached to a cylinder. Wonder why he skipped that step. ORIGINAL: I'm just not so happy with that next to last step. It feels like you can't take the inbetween steps in a continuous way. Yes they're equivalent, but you can't turn the one into the other.

  2. It's because the diagrams are in 2D that makes it extra confusing, but the inside of the tube, and in fact the ellipse in the center is connected to the outside of the sphere. Otherwise the elipse would rattle inside it, but instead it's stationary.
