  2. Best video ever! :) I'm kidding. Very well said and very true. I kind of forgot what it is like being a new Linux user. Over time Linux just became an extension of me and part of my everyday life. I do remember in the early 2000's hearing of Linux, seeing the penguin mascot and wondering what is this all about? My first experience with Linux was Ubuntu (version ) something or other. I installed it, fooled around for about an hour, tried to figure out why my sound wouldn't work, got fed up and re-installed Windows. I remember uttering those words, "Linux sucks". A few years later (2008ish) a great friend and all in all wonderful human being showed me this OS name Linux Mint. This friend of mine was co-founder of what came to be a very successful ISP where I live. At the moment he was working with some over the air satellite software and I was floored at what he was able to do with this OS. I went home, through Mint along side Windows on the old Dell and that was the beginning of the end of my Microsoft life. My next distro was Fedora and Windows never had a home on any of my machines again. I too watched the Video, Alex D'or mentioned in the comments. I think ThioJoe misses the point completely. I said it in those comments and I'll say it here: Windows is a PRODUCT. It is built like a product. Microsoft is selling a product. Linux related software is a PROJECT. Sure Red Hat this and Canonical that, but the software is still projects and built and ran like projects. The projects are always evolving, always changing. Some die. Some thrive. Some stall and some advance. Either way, there are amazing ideas and brilliance being shared and brought to life by people because a passion for the development and countless hours of volunteered effort. The community as a whole is really quite remarkable. My advice to new users. ThioJoe talks about the pros and cons of switching to Linux. It doesn't have to be a "switch" to Linux. You can have your cake and eat it to. I say dual boot! Some will love it as I did. Others won't and that's okay. To each his own. Peace. And BTW... I know this Karl guy personally and he's not much of an artist. He's just a "Shape mover and colorer". :) Derek's the man!

  6. Great video, Dorian. Antergos has been my daily driver (on and off) for a couple years now. Cnchi was a mess for a while, but the last big overhaul really solved a lot of the issues the installer had. Cnchi also as a cool option to automatically setup /boot/efi, /boot, /(root) and /home on separate partitions, which is handy for dual booting. GNOME was my DE of choice forever because I love the workflow. As of late I've gone all in on Plasma (since 5.12 was released) on my main rig. RAM usage is way down compared to GNOME and it's very easy to create the GNOME workflow (and improve that workflow) in Plasma. For light weight distros I always gravitate toward Peppermint and Linux Lite. For REALLY light weight Antix is pretty great. Sorry for rambling. :)

  8. Great review, brother. I used elementary as a daily driver quite a few years back. It lasted 3 days... tops. I 100% agree with the "locked down" aspect of the distro. Mac-like is and understatement and that's totally okay for that type of user. I can think of a handful of people I would recommend it to. However.... a distro not recognizing my printer drives me insane and that would be kind of a deal breaker for me recommending it to my mother-in-law. Not having "Elementary Tweaks" and canning settings makes zero sense to me as well. Don't get me wrong. I think Daniel and the team had done some amazing work. It looks beautiful and very consistent throughout. It's just not my cup of tea.

  12. Hey Dorian. A few years ago I would sometimes have issues booting from USB and burning iso's properly to USB. I started making it a practice to reformat my USB sticks everytime prior to dd command. Gparted > select my usb > delete all existing partitions > new partition table (msdos or GPT) > new partition (entire usb to fat32). I haven't had an issue since.

  20. Q4OS reminds me of what Korora is to Fedora or Gecko is to OpenSUSE. It's an awesome Debian base but not stuck to the "free only" policy. As for stock, plain ol' Debian, there is no "non-free" software (google-chrome, nvidia drivers, codecs etc...) You can install all of these things but Debian doesn't make it easy as where Q4OS makes it very easy. The packages tend to be older in Debian stable (and testing for that matter) but it is super rock solid and will run forever in production.
