Gato Gate Yes, I understand that the referendum was illegal, but I don't think that checking off a box on a piece of paper and trying to deposit said paper in a box justifies actions such as being kicked, having one's hair pulled, or being shot at with rubber bullets.

Russin Outlaw Catalonia's unilateral bid for independence is illegal under the Spanish Constitution. For a independence referendum to be legal, it has to be voted on by the entire country, not just the region looking to separate. Having said that, however, I can't say that I'm liking how the central government is handling the situation. Its heavy handed approach is just going to alienate the Catalan people even further and possibly change the minds of Catalans who originally didn't want to break away from Spain.

Antonius Raja I can't dispute that, but that shouldn't excuse the excessive force the Guardia Civil used against peaceful protesters.

Alexandre Wozikowski And how exactly would forcing people of European descent from North America to Europe work? If the vast majority of those people had a choice, they'd want to go to the UK or Ireland simply because those countries use English. Both countries together couldn't handle hundreds of millions of immigrants. And if they didn't have a choice, how do you determine where they would go? Ancestry? That's not going to work out too well since we're so mixed, most of us probably don't even know what our ancestry exactly is.

ThePp12345678 The last I heard was that Catalonia, if it gains independence, wants to be part of the EU.

Sir Francis T. Woolridge "Every" law enforcement? It just seems to me, from what I had seen live from Sky News and France 24 (both streams legally available here on YouTube 👍) the morning of the referendum, that the response of the Guardia Civil was out of proportion to the actual actions of the Catalan people and government. Although the referendum was illegal, it was civil wrongdoing as opposed to criminal, and should've been addressed as such.

Sir Francis T. Woolridge Plus, I believe that all the current EU members have to approve a new nation's application anyway, right? I think I read somewhere this week that Spain had already stated it wouldn't approve a Catalan application even if the EU considered it.

Ruby Honey My understanding is that an independent Catalonia wants to be an EU member.
