+paddygirl It could be argued that Sherlock itself is an AU fanfiction of the original Victorian era stories. Both are awesome. : )

+Chiko was here Yes, this is an one off special. The regular series won't be back until 2017 (last I read).
13
+Toma “HeavyCake” Hawk I love Cumberbatch's version of Sherlock, but the definitive Sherlock Holmes for me will always be Jeremy Brett. Toma, if you ever get a chance to see Brett's series, do so. I promise you'll change your mind about who "owns" Sherlock.
12
+Radculas I was wondering if anyone else noticed that bit at the beginning. : )
12
+Noah Blumenthal More proof that Moffat is the love child of Moriarty and the Master. ; D
12
+Josh McDonald That and all the comments insisting that since Sherlock is in the Victorian era, the Doctor has to be involved somehow. I'd love to see a Doctor Who / Sherlock crossover as much as the next person, but if it ever happens, it probably won't be as a full episode or special. My guess is that it would be a sketch for Children in Need or Comic Relief.

The best way I can describe Brett's performance is this: Pretend there's a sci fi machine that can scan a book and reproduce a character from that book in human form. That machine scanned the Sherlock Holmes stories and spit out Jeremy Brett.
10
+Devanuj Baruah Or was it the other way round? ; )
7
+Sofia Castro I can't say for certain that I believe it's Molly, but it sounds more like her than Mary.
7
+GURken That's the Russian series, I presume? I've never seen it, but I've heard that it's very good.
5
+001BINARY100 Yep. However, one could argue that Moffat and Gatiss' modern version is an AU fanfic of the original Victorian era stories.
5
Jabba 101 Sherlock was using "ghosts" as a metaphor for bad memories and experiences that negatively affect a person for a long time after the fact. He wasn't referring to the ones who come out and say, "Boo!".
5
+Guardian Eris Very true.
4
+Mustafalllica Maybe we'll get to see him and Benedict Cumberbatch together in a Marvel movie (assuming Doctor Strange does well enough for Marvel to keep BC as Strange).
4
TheRecreator This is true. When TPTB during the Third Doctor's era wanted to create a villain from the Doctor's own people, the idea was that the villain would be the Moriarty to the Doctor's Sherlock.
4
+Traeschi35 This is an one off special. No connection to the other episodes.
3
xADesignz Oh, you know they would. : ) I'd really love to see Sherlock's reaction to the TARDIS as well. There's a neat piece of funny fan art floating around online that has Sherlock, John, and the 11th Doctor inside the TARDIS. John doesn't seem to have much difficulty accepting that the inside is bigger than the outside, but Sherlock has a mental breakdown because the existence of the TARDIS shouldn't be possible.
3
+Imy Walker It might be how a Victorian era person would've said the address.
3
Amanda Brodersen This special will air in December. Season 4, last I read, won't be aired until 2017.
3
+Sri K Sounds like you're thinking about the Doctor Who Christmas special, "The Snowmen". And there's only a brief bit where the Doctor is pretending to be Sherlock Holmes, but it's still funny.
3
+MrCool2monkey Ooh, I hadn't thought of that. They could go with the opening they have now with Victorian scenes rather than modern ones. An updated version of the Granada series opener is possible as well.
3
clperry1701 Oh, good. Although there were female doctors in England at that time, it was still rare, so I wonder what Molly's role will be.
3
+Ladyy Door My understanding is that this special has nothing to do with the previous series. Just like +Jonathan Sapida posted, this special is something Moffat and Gatiss wanted to do for fun.
3
+Darren Wijaya The original stories the show is based off of were written and set in the Victorian era so Moffat and Gatiss decided to do an one off special set in that time period. Nothing to do with any previous or future seasons.
3
1Girl248 Then Moffat and company are misleading us. Every time I've seen them talk about it this year, they keep saying that the special is its own little "bubble", meaning that it has nothing to do with what we've seen before or what we'll see next series. : )
3
+1Girl248 *SPOILERS, SHERLOCKIANS* Turns out you were right. Good thing I watched the special by myself because as soon as it was revealed that the Victorian era was modern Sherlock's drug-fueled imagination, I called Moffat and Gatiss (but mostly Moffat) lying bastards for nearly a hour. : )
3
+Davide La Monaca Just the special.
2
Down Range Film *pats empty old age home rocking chair* Have a seat next to me. Tom Baker was my first Doctor, too. However, Jeremy Brett was my first Holmes.
2
+Adélia Braga Would you like a shock blanket? ; )
2
+FightmanProd If the whole special is as dark as the trailer, Doctor Who references (if any) are going to be very subtle.
2
+The Toxic Atheist It's an one-off special for Christmas.
2
+Sri K Unfortunately, I don't think we'll ever see a crossover between the two as a canon episode (either series) or a full special. Something like that would be better suited as a sketch for Children in Need or Comic Relief.
2
Sri K True, but I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for a Children in Need / Comic Relief sketch. : )
2
+geronimo It's an one-off special for Christmas.
2
+ThatDoctorWhoFangirl Last I read, Series Four is supposed to air in 2017.
2
+Schmutz Lord I love Cumberbatch's portrayal, but as far as I'm concerned, the best Sherlock actor of all time was Jeremy Brett. If you ever get a chance to see his work, do so.
2
+ogdayflow I thought I heard her voice asking someone, "Who are you?" However, considering that she wasn't a character from the books, it's sadly quite possible we won't see her in this special. I hope I'm wrong, though. : )
2
TheRecreator TPTB = "The Powers That Be" Sorry about that. I usually try not to use acronyms unless I'm fairly certain they're common knowledge. : (
2
+ryandc ranchdel Does it matter? : p ....
2
Smashy Smashy Eggman "You're gonna feel a tad silly when you watch the actual episode" *SPOILER FOR SPECIAL* Why? Every time Moffat or Gatiss discussed this special this year, they insisted that this was a one-off special, having nothing to do with the regular series. And, against our better judgement, many of us believed that up until the first modern day scene. : )
1
Spare Hawk Me watching the special: *SPOILER* "Moffat and Gatiss are lying bastards!" : )
1
Jenile Mirage The comment wasn't wrong based on the information that was given directly from the production team. They said this special was going to be in its own "little bubble". P.S. It's "e-i-e-i-o" in the Old MacDonald song.
1
Jenile Mirage You'd think we Sherlock and/or Doctor Who fans would know better by now that if we're vehemently told something about an episode or series, we should know it's a lie or red herring. : /
1
+Lalit Padekar It's not. I would imagine that if a crossover were to ever happen, it wouldn't be as dark as this trailer is suggesting the special will be. A crossover, in my opinion, would be more suited for a sketch on either Children in Need or Comic Relief.
1
+chloe louise I think it was the way Sherlock said, "We are ready to begin," at the start of the trailer.
1
+AbigailSmith99 Sherlock usually airs on PBS Masterpiece Mystery. I'm sure they'll air this, it's just a question of how long us Yanks are going to have to wait to see it after it airs in the UK.
1
TheJrbdog True. I'm probably not going to watch it on PBS anyway. I'll either get it off of iTunes or through "alternative" sources.
1
GURken Thanks for the link. : )
1
+Debbie Lough As I re-read the stories now, the Holmes voice in my head is Brett, but the Watson voice is Freeman.
1
johnvile The PBS Masterpiece version of this trailer has a lighter picture. It's still generally dark, but some things you can see better.
1
+Mathieu Leader It's an one-off special for Christmas.
1
+Nola Alexander It'll be airing on PBS in the US. Don't know how long we'll have to wait, though.
1
+Tommy Scannell It's an one-off special for Christmas.
1
+ShmartinJo If what I've been reading and hearing from the creators of Sherlock is true, I don't think you'll need to watch any of the other episodes before this special. If you do go ahead and watch the previous episodes (which I highly recommend), keep in mind that the series' normal setting is present day. This special is just something fun the creators of Sherlock wanted to do since the original books were written and set in the Victorian era.
1
+Mariana Campaniço Not sure. I haven't heard or seen anything about it either way. If Moffat and Gatiss try to make this special more like the books, Mycroft either won't be in it or his involvement is going to be brief. In the books, Mycroft didn't stray far from the Diogenes Club.
1
+fox inuasha The video is called simply "Wholock". The username it's under is "John Smith". From a technical standpoint, it is an awesome video.
1
Cailin Coane That's good to know. I wonder what type of character Victorian Molly is going to be. It wouldn't be too implausible for Victorian Molly to still be a doctor of some sort, but assuming that Moffat / Gatiss are going to try to adhere to the values and attitudes of that era, I'm not expecting her to be.
1
+MinecraftSurveyCorps Your local PBS station. If you missed it on the 1st, PBS will repeat it on the 10th.
1
+Michael Churchill Everything I've read and heard so far indicates this special is going to air sometime on or around Christmas Day. The Children in Need telethon airs in November.
1
+kaustabh das My theory at this point is that next series / season will introduce a brother of Moriarty's who has taken over Jim's criminal network and is responsible for the video. In "The Final Problem" (original Conan Doyle story), it is mentioned that Professor Moriarty has a brother, a Colonel James Moriarty. However, the story doesn't mention if this brother is older, younger, or a twin. My guess is that if Andrew Scott is available and willing, the brother will be a twin.
1
@Everyone (except for people who are going to be ugly about it): I am so sorry that the spoiler was showing. I thought I had that hidden under the "Show More" link. That should be fixed now. Again, I do apologize. : (
1
Chiko was here I was apologizing for inadvertently showing a spoiler that I thought was hidden. Definitely not apologizing for Moffat. : )
1
1Girl248 Yes, Moffat and Gatiss do love to mislead. In the long run, I guess it is preferable to knowing everything before watching. However, I'm a huge sucker for almost anything relating to the late Victorian era and was really looking forward to the TV show's version of its source material. Overall, the special was good, but I wished it had stayed purely Victorian.
1
+Nishith Parikh There's no connection between the end of the third series (set in present day) and this special (set in the Victorian era). However, it would be cool to see Victorian Moriarty. : )
1
Desmond Wilson Sweet. : )
1
+Sandro The Great This is an one-off Christmas special taking place in the era that the original Sherlock Holmes stories were written and set. Plot wise, no relation to what we've seen already or will see in the future.
