Ireland has been an independent republic for around ninety plus years already.

They did the same thing back in 2014.

@trommelbiel I don't live in Northern Ireland, so I can't comment on what the people who do live there feel. However, considering the bitter history of the region, I would imagine that it would take something drastic (like maybe a significant economic downturn) for many current unionists to rethink their position of wanting to stay within the UK.

I think you mean the British government, not the Crown. The Queen can't tell Scotland it can stay or go.

Unless its attitude has changed in the past seven years, I doubt it. The EU told Scotland in 2014 that should it gain independence, it would have to go through the same process as any other country wanting to join the EU, a process that could take some time. It wouldn't give Scotland any breaks because it was splitting from what was then an EU member state.

@geda8496 Well, it's what I remember from that time. If I'm wrong, then I'm wrong.

@geda8496 That's why my original post started with, "Unless its attitude has changed in the past seven years, ...".

It can't. I remember during the run up to the last referendum the EU bluntly told the Scottish government that, should it gain independence, it would be treated like any other new country wanting into the EU and that process could take years.

No, because none of them have been storming the Scottish Parliament or planning on kidnapping or harming government officials.

@Kevin_Patrick001 You think I'm a liberal? I would say you're funny, but calling for an enemy of the US to nuke its largest cities (which would have repercussions for the rest of the country as well) sounds like a threat to me.
