@cmj_87 Unless you're pure Native American, more than likely you wouldn't exist if it hadn't been for Columbus' voyages spurring European settlement of the Americas.

@cmj_87 No, I'm not excusing what Columbus, those with him, and those who came after him did to the indigenous populations of the Americas. However, that doesn't mean those of us of European ancestry in the New World can't acknowledge that we owe our existence to Columbus' voyages.

@cmj_87 I don't celebrate the holiday myself (i.e., I don't go to parades or similar events) and couldn't care less if anyone else does or not. But you don't have to go to parades and the like to acknowledge the history changing event. And by acknowledging said event, that includes both the good and the bad.
