Da Pumaface There are precedents for the Doctor to be played by an actor who has been on the show as another character. The current Doctor, Peter Capaldi, has had two roles in the Whoniverse: Caecilius in "The Fires of Pompeii" (Series 4) and John Frobisher in Series 3 of Torchwood. And during the Classic Era, the Sixth Doctor, Colin Baker, played a Gallifreyan guard during the season right before the one in which he became the Doctor.

+jackdev73 Season / Series 9 finale showed an older White Time Lord regenerate into a younger Black Time Lady. Season / Series 8 introduced us to a female Master. It's entirely possible we could see a female and/or ethnic minority Doctor at some point. And as long as TPTB pick an actor / actress because of his/her talent and not his/her skin color and/or anatomy, I'm perfectly fine with a non-White and/or non-male Doctor. P.S. And I'm as far from the left as the Sun is from Pluto.

Check the date this video was originally released. It was before Bowie's death.

+Lily Mason Have you ever seen him in his US series, House? His character in that show was not a nice guy by any stretch of the imagination.

Not when this video was originally produced.

Martin Espino I didn't even really think about it, that's the term I grew up with here in the US to collectively describe people who aren't White. I don't ever remember hearing it being used in general conversation as a derogatory term. But, now that I'm re-reading my post, I realize I should've used "non-White" or a similar term because there are more countries in which Whites are the minority rather than the majority.

***** I can't speak for others, but the way I see it is that even though the Doctor as a character is an alien, he's British in spirit. To me, it's such a core part of the character that having an actor/actress (no matter how good he/she is) who isn't British would just ruin it. I'm American, by the way. : )
