+Sandman In the credits of the American shows, the original British ones are acknowledged, so I'm assuming Norman Lear had permission to work with the original concepts. To me, that's not technically a rip off, more like copying. And regardless of whether we call it a rip off or a copy, the likelihood of the average American having seen the original British series at that time was slim, so to them these shows were original.

Sandman I guess I didn't make it clear enough that it really doesn't matter if you want to call it a rip off or a copy, the main point is that the American versions were new to American audiences.

Sandman Look, I was just expressing my opinion as to the nuance between "rip off" and "copy". You don't have to agree with me, I'm okay with that. So let's both stop the rehashing, if for no other reason than to keep the other people on this thread from getting continual notifications that aren't really adding anything to the conversation. : )

+JK Wiseman Even though Dallas started in the 70's, it had more of an 80's vibe to it.

+Dena Spohn I'm a bit conflicted as to whether Fonzie or Archie should be first, but I agree with you about Hawkeye and JR.

+Johan Mahoney-Berg To most Americans at the time, Archie was just as original as the Fonz. British TV wasn't as easy to find back then and the likelihood of the average American having seen the original British series was slim.

I'd classify JR Ewing as a memorable 80's TV character rather than a 70's one. I'll never forget the night that JR's shooter was to be revealed. My Girl Scout troop ended its meeting early so we could all get home in time to watch it.
