  1. The only reason Castro was able to keep the Cuban economy from total collapse for so long was due to support from the (then) Soviet Union. When it collapsed, I think Venezuela was able to pick up some of the slack for a little while, but once both countries were out of the picture, Cuba's economy tanked.
