Comments by "retnavybrat" (@retnavybrat) on "Ontario woman arrested, jailed in U.S. for driving with a Canadian licence" video.
Wouldn't she have grounds to sue for false imprisonment, though, since she was arrested under false pretenses?

+Tommy Ohlrich She didn't break the law as it is legal to drive with a Canadian driver's license here in the States. She was arrested under false pretenses.

What part of she was arrested for breaking a law that doesn't exist are you not grasping here?

+Turner D Century Unfortunately, the only way this is going to stop is if someone decides to file a lawsuit.

If I remember correctly, I was told from the moment I first received my (USA) passport to keep it on me at all times when in a foreign country.

+Vancouver Island Waterjet Regardless of what demographic boxes a person can check off, the arrest was wrong and the person arrested should be shown sympathy.

I'll agree with you that she had poor judgment, but that doesn't negate the fact that she was in that situation due to an illegal act by that officer.

I was taught the same thing about always keeping the passport on you.

Personally, I don't think this was a case of a random officer being ignorant of the law.

+Greg Caesar What part of she was arrested for breaking a non-existent law did you not comprehend?

If that's the case, by all means, issue her a speeding ticket. Don't arrest her for violating a law that doesn't exist.

It's not the law, though. Canadians' drivers licenses are perfectly valid here in the States.

+Jono Stack I remember back in the 70s, my family was pulled over driving through Georgia because our car just happened to look like one that had been stolen. Anyone with common sense could take one look at us and know that wasn't the car they were looking for (my aunt and my mother, three kids, two Chihuahuas, and every free space stuffed with travel bags of some sort all crammed into the car).
