He stopped being a working member of the Royal Family. That doesn't automatically remove him or his children from the line of succession.
Using that as the top requirement, the only people who could inherit the British throne would be William (maybe his kids as well since the assumption is that they will take up duties when they're older), Prince Edward (but not his kids, since it doesn't look like they'll be part of the working royals), Princess Anne (but definitely not her descendants), and the Duke of Gloucester (but definitely not his descendants). I'm not sure if the Duke of Kent is still a working royal.
That is, at best, only seven people (one of whom will be deceased before Charles and one who, if she doesn't predecease her brother, will pass away not long after). If you're a supporter of monarchy as an institution, wouldn't you want a healthier line of succession than that?
