More like what's more convenient for the residents of that area. It looks to me as if it'd be easier for them to be Canadian.

Trev C These people are literally surrounded by Canada. If they think it's more beneficial to be part of Canada, why shouldn't they be allowed to do so?

Yes, when the residents obtain Canadian citizenship, they can have dual US-Canadian citizenship if they wish. The question I'd be curious to know the answer to is how would that Canadian citizenship be obtained? Would it be automatic as soon as the territory was officially transferred or would Canada make the residents go through the same process as any other immigrant?

@james j: Don't give Trump any ideas. 🙃

Trev C You do realize it was illegal under British law for the American colonies to split from the UK, right? Yet we did it anyway. Not that I'm saying the issue surrounding (quite literally) this little bit of land is anywhere near as monumental as the reasons why we became our own country, but there are times where it's more prudent to let a group go its own way if that's what that group desires. I have no preference myself as to which country Northwest Angle ends up being a part of, but I do want their wishes to be honored.

Trump's imaginary wall would end up being a lot longer if it had to go around Texas and California.

Trev C Slight difference between what's going on here and the Civil War. The Northwest Angle community isn't unilaterally declaring itself no longer a part of the US.
7
@michael b My question was about how Canadian citizenship would be obtained if Northwest Angle was ever ceded to Canada.

Uh, how can the CBC be blocking comments if I just read and am now responding to your comment?

@wisenber Then why are you continuing to argue the point?

@catlover1986 From what I've read and heard about this area, the people there don't have any problems with being American citizens, per se, it's just that it's a pain in the posterior to have to leave the US and travel through Canada, just to get back into the US to do basic things like seeing a doctor or go grocery shopping.
2
@wisenber If it was easier for the residents to use the water route to go anywhere else within the US, what country this community wants to be in wouldn't even be an issue.
2
@wisenber If they don't, they don't. But the residents should have the opportunity to decide that for themselves.

@wisenber If there's really no interest in changing the status quo, then fine. I was under the impression from this and another video about the area that there might be interest among at least some members of the community to become Canadian. Either way, I just want to see the community's wishes honored.

This is a unique situation. The area is literally surrounded by Canada. If this is truly something the residents want, I don't see any problem with letting them be annexed. It would make day to day living a lot easier for them.
1
@wisenber That was the impression I received when you brought up the water route. As I mentioned in another post, if there really isn't any interest among the members of the community to change countries, fine. That's their prerogative. I was under the impression that there was.

If a significant number of the residents want it and there's no reasonable objection by either Manitobans, their provincial government, and the Canadian federal government, go for it.
