Impeachment is only the first step in the attempt to remove a sitting President and, per the Constitution, is the sole responsibility of the House. Once a President is impeached, the Senate tries him and votes on whether or not to remove him.

The US Constitution would disagree with you. "The House of Representatives shall [choose] their Speaker and other Officers; and shall have the sole Power of Impeachment." https://www.senate.gov/civics/constitution_item/constitution.htm#a1

To be honest, I don't know what the procedure is regarding how a Senate trial is instigated, but I'm pretty sure, whatever happens or doesn't happen, the record of the House voting for impeachment will still stand.

Then what did the House vote on Wednesday night?

Actually, Trump has been impeached. Being impeached is not unlike you or I being charged with a crime. From the US Constitution: "The House of Representatives shall [choose] their Speaker and other Officers; and shall have the sole Power of Impeachment." https://www.senate.gov/civics/constitution_item/constitution.htm#a1

Impeachment is essentially the House saying that it believes a President has committed actions that warrant his removal from office. Kind of like a grand jury filing charges against someone. No matter what happens or doesn't happen on the Senate side, it won't change the fact that Trump has been impeached.

Actually, the Senate consists of 53 Republicans, 45 Democrats, and 2 independents.
