  6. I played with Barbies all during my childhood and I never remember thinking I had to look like her when I grew up. The only problem I had with how she looked was that every Barbie was blonde (I'm a brunette). I was envious of a couple of Black girls I used to play with because their Barbies had dark hair.

  16. I could hazard a guess as to why you'd never see a school with the concept in a poor neighborhood. Since nearly everyone is convinced that you need to be on a device 24/7 to get ahead these days, a suggestion that poor kids not use technology in school would get the person proposing it accused of elitism and/or racism (if the poor kids in question are also minorities).

  17. This way of voting could still work with the Electoral College. Right now, the candidate who wins a plurality of votes statewide (except in Nebraska and Maine) gets all the electoral votes for that state. The only difference I can see with ranked-choice voting is that the winning candidate for a state would have a majority of votes (50% + 1) as opposed to a plurality.

  22. Out of curiosity, what about their dependents? When I was growing up, my dad was in the US Navy and I had the same access to the armed forces' health facilities as he did, at no charge. That stopped at age 18 (or 23, if you were a full time college student).

However, a debate on what governments are or aren't doing wasn't really what I was aiming for. What I sincerely was curious about was what you think should replace taxes as far as government income is concerned.

  42. I call baloney sauce on Mr. Zimmerman's assertion that third party/independent candidates are "spoilers". The goal of any candidate, regardless of party affiliation (or lack thereof), is to try and convince the most number of people to vote for him/her. If she/he can't accomplish that, the fault lies with the candidate, not his/her competitors.

  51. I wouldn't mind trying this type of voting, but I don't think it's the cure all for breaking up the Democrat-Republican duopoly. In my opinion, the major factor in third party and independent candidates not gathering enough momentum to have a realistic shot is lack of publicity. Although I don't believe in mandating media coverage, I think something should be done to persuade the cable news outlets, broadcast networks, etc..., to give as much coverage to third party/independent candidates as they do the candidates of the major parties.

  52. To play devil's advocate for the economics major, if her goal was to get a job at one of the big financial firms in New York City, attending graduate school there wasn't a bad idea in theory. Over the time that she would have been working towards her degree, she could've either worked low level jobs or had internships with various companies in her field and by the time she graduated, she'd have some contacts to help her get a permanent position.

  68. But Disney doesn't produce anything we have to have, as opposed to things we simply want. As long as it isn't trying to keep other companies from making and/or distributing their films, its high market share isn't really hurting anyone. Consumers always have a choice as to whether or not to see Disney produced movies. Does my opinion meet the letter of US anti-trust law? Probably not, since the law probably doesn't differentiate between companies that produce necessary goods and services and those that don't. However, if I was the FTC / DoJ and had to prioritize what monopolies to go after, a movie studio would be way down the list compared to something like a pharmaceutical manufacturer.

  73. How in the world can prescription drugs not be considered "essential"? In many cases, it's cheaper for the government to pay for the drugs than to pay for the patient's treatment when the condition worsens. For example, wouldn't it make more sense to pay for a person's cholesterol medicine than to pay for treating her/him after he/she has a heart attack or stroke?

  74. The dates of the Presidential election, the meeting of the Electoral College, and the start of a Presidential term are all set by the US Constitution. To change any or all of them would require a Constitutional amendment and, with everything else that's going on right now, I just can't see that happening before November.

  76.  @rycekryspee3964  Although I hate to see anyone lose a job, that's not my complaint with self-checkouts. If I use a self-checkout, that saves the company money that it would've spent on salaries, so why not pass some of that savings onto the customer that chooses to use the self-checkout?
