To play devil's advocate for the economics major, if her goal was to get a job at one of the big financial firms in New York City, attending graduate school there wasn't a bad idea in theory. Over the time that she would have been working towards her degree, she could've either worked low level jobs or had internships with various companies in her field and by the time she graduated, she'd have some contacts to help her get a permanent position.
