  1. A lot of patriotism where common sense is needed. Yes, Myloisonau, the bravery of many Soviet soldiers is indeed admirable. But there is no scientific proof that socialism is better than capitalism in producing good armies. You say that the Western allies needed much more soldiers than the Germans had to achieve their victories in Normandy. However, exactly the same is true for most of the Soviet victories! Soviets had much higher losses at Kursk, for example, than the Germans had. Most Soviet victories were the result of superiority in manpower and materials - and the Soviets wouldn't have that kind of superiority against the Western Allies.

  2. ruben oteiza is right that it was the Japanese who were thrashed earlier - they lost the border conflicts with the Soviets in 1939 (the Japanese army didn't have much artillery and motorized units, which means that they were weak in open terrain - the terrain of Southeat Asia suited them better). However, I nevertheless believe that Western Allied air superiority and the A-bomb would be deceisive.
