The "special operation" failed. That's obvious. So Putin had only two choices: make peace or escalate (= turning the special operation into full-scale war). He chose the latter. That way he didn't choose what is good for Russia, he chose what he thinks is right for his regime to survice politically (which are entirely different things).

Russia... never try to convince yourself that you are a world power when in reality your GDP is smaller than Italy's... Russia is doomed.

It was very clear since February that this Cold War 2.0. The Soviet Union tried to compete with the West, but failed. History repeating itself.

@nickradic What about Russian birthrate being 1.5 per woman (of course, birth rate of 2 is needed so that the population doesn't shrink)? What about Russia being unattractive to immigrants, but lots of Russians are leaving the country? What about every young Russian soldier dying in Ukraine before he started a family making it even worse? Russia in the future won't have enough people, which means not enough workers, and not enough soldiers for wars like this. And there is enough oil and gas in the world so that on the long run, the Western world can do without Russian gas and oil.

@kvadratnixachapuri9745 Since 2022 isn't over yet, there can only be numbers for 2021. Russia's GDP was 1.775 billion dollars in 2021.
