Henry VIII had the best academic education of any English king prior to him - and not just because he was raised during the Renaissance. Prior to Henry VIII, kings were educated primarily in the military arts and statecraft. Henry's education in statecraft was foreshortened because he wasn't initially raised to rule and was left in the company of women for much of his youth. The French King Francis I was similarly the first in a line of monarchs to be educated in the new humanist style. Also, like Henry, Francis was raised in the company of women (his father died prematurely so Francis was raised by his mother and sister). Both of these men were narcissists and had fleeting relationships with copious women. Such is the result of spoiling by mothers.
