  21. I love the A-10, it's a great CAS aircraft. But the proliferation of surface to air missiles is threatening manned CAS as a role. Drones with hellfire missiles can fulfill CAS with lower cost of equipment and human life, while more specialized strike missions can be carried out by F-35s dropping guided munitions from a safe altitude. Also, despite the cost overruns and delays, the F-35 program is finally starting to deliver some rather effective cutting edge multirole aircraft which are superior to anything else in the world right now.

  24. I don't like the cost overruns either, but that being said, the F-35 is actually a very capable aircraft despite what the press would have you believe. There are only a few other aircraft in the world with stealth and sensor systems rivaling that of the F-35, and it combines these aspects with an above average loiter time and an acceptable weapons load capability. The F-22 is stealthier, the F-15 strike variant has a better payload, the F-16 is faster, but none surpass the F-35 in all around versatility, and no other modern jet combines these capabilities with VTOL capabilities. The Harrier is VTOL, but it's an aging airframe which is behind the curve in capability compared to modern aircraft.

  30. I absolutely do agree that the F-35 has had some serious cost overruns, and they have kind of screwed the American taxpayer in that regard. That being said, it's actually a much better aircraft than most people give it credit for. It was advertised as a master of all, a plane that could excel at every possible air combat role at once. No aircraft can be the best at everything, compromise is a normal part of designing a weapon system. You can either built a super effective specialist aircraft designed to excel at one role, but lacking in other areas, or you can build a jack of all trades which is reasonably effective at multiple mission types but can be out-performed by a specialist aircraft. The F-35 is the latter. It's a stealthy and effective fighter, but not as stealthy as the F-22. It has a decent bomb and missile load, but the strike variants of the F-15 can carry a larger payload. It can do short takeoff, but it still needs a short runway, it's not a helicopter. It's an all around above average plane, with an above average price tag to match.

  38. I seriously doubt it. Russia is trying to hype up their Su-35 as being an invincible, world class super plane, which it is most certainly not. At best, it might be roughly on par with the excellent F-22 Raptor, a 40 year old fighter that is still arguably the best in the world. The problems of the F-35 have been overblown by over-zealous armchair generals who think they know better than actual experts. Yes, design beauraus can be wasteful, and mission creep has prevented the F-35 from being a truly best in class aircraft in any one single role, but it is still one of the most capable multi-role fighters in the world today.

Sometimes it's better to have multiple different weapons for different roles, and sometimes it is best to have one expensive but capable weapon that can do several roles. The modern assault rifle is an example of this, it combined the long ranged accuracy of a battle rifle with the capacity for accurate fully automatic fire of a SMG into one weapon. Military analysts (and some dead weight beauracrats) have come together to decide to use the latter approach in this case.

  41. It wouldn't be cheaper if stealth and carrier capabilities are important to you. Compared to other stealth aircraft, the F-35 is actually relatively cheap. Also, keep in mind, there are hidden costs to operating multiple aircraft types. It increases the amount of ground crew, pilots, training and spare parts you need, and greatly complicates logistics.

  45. The F-35 is pretty good actually. The harshest criticism it gets comes mostly from people who don't know much about modern military aircraft. It's not a war winning superweapon, but it is a capable aircraft with good stealth characteristics, a very modern sensor array, and a combination of long loiter time and good payload which allow it to perform ground support roles effectively. It can also take off from short runways, and is a decent fighter, although it is surpassed by the F-22 in this respect.

  46. This is actually a normal amount of failures for a new weapon system. It's just that these failures are more expensive because modern fighter aircraft are very costly to develop. The excellent M1 Abrams was widely criticized for being a waste of money, and some even argued for returning to the older M60 Patton tank, but when an actual war broke out, the Abrams proved to be a highly effective war machine, far superior to its Soviet counterparts.
