Well, there was a conspiracy. China tried to cover up the existence of this virus. As for where the virus came from, it's possible that it was from a laboratory, but it's genetic makeup suggests it is a mutated strain that usually attacks animals. China's unsanitary open air food markets seem like a more likely source than research labs, although considering notoriously lax safety standards, both are possible.

@personman1132 several. China Uncensored (a YouTube channel) has a video on the topic. There are a few articles on news sites that cite evidence of China attempting to silence early claims by doctors of a new illness spreading. They refer to it as "rumormongering", and often punish those attempting to share information about the outbreak.
