I've heard people comparing him to El Salvador's current prime minister. They call him a strongman, not a dictator. He wields immense power and uses it very forcefully, but many defend this because they consider it necessary to root out the rot eating at the roots of their nation. For Chilie, it was socialism, for El Salvador, it's organized crime. Things got so bad that many accepted a dictator-like figure because they promised stability, at the cost of the lives of those caught in the crossfire. Perhaps some actions are never defensible, but then again, we fight wars to stop the rise of fascism and communism. Perhaps this is too much to judge for people as small as us.
